The Madison Area Soccer Referee Unit
(“MASRU”) develops, certifies and represents United States Soccer Federation (“USSF”) referees throughout the service area of the Madison Area Youth Soccer Association (“MAYSA”). In 2008, we registered 621 new and re-certified referees; in 2007, 511 referees.

Our primary service to USSF referees (youth and adult) and to the Game is to annually train game officials and assignors and to provide developmental and advancement assessments.

We assist and advocate for area referees who officiate Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (“WIAA”) high school soccer and also collaborate with the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (“NISOA”) on joint training clinics.

MASRU members annually elect a volunteer Board of Directors who organizes the Unit’s activities.

The MASRU Board:
  • Advises the District Referee Administrator (appointed by the Wisconsin State Referee Administrator) on disciplinary issues, including assault, abuse and misconduct;
  • Assists the District Director of Instruction to offer instruction in our region;
  • Works with MAYSA Staff to advance our shared goal of conducting USSF matches in a fair and safe manner that ensures player and spectator enjoyment.
